Abuja is Nigeria’s most opulent city. With mansions towering behind beautifully trimmed topiary and luxury cars zooming past seemingly endless highways, it’s easy to think fun activities would be expensive.
I set out to prove otherwise and discovered things to do under ₦5000 in Abuja.
Enjoy A Hearty Meal
Food Central – Get directions
It’s a bad idea to explore on an empty tummy, make a fuel stop at Food Central. They serve yummy large portions and are open 24 hours.
Be aware, their POS machine never works. Do go with cash or be ready for the escorted walk to the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) next door.
Learn The Beautiful Art of Pottery
Ushafa Pottery Center
Watch the Gbagyi women dexterously chip away at the clay pots placed on their laps at Ushafa Pottery Center. I’d never seen art so delicate and I asked to join in; a request they welcomed with open arms. Don’t forget to buy memorabilia as a token of your appreciation.
Hop On A Train To Kaduna
₦3000 return ticket
Idu Train Station – Get directions
The thrill is in the ride not the destination. The train tracks run through little picturesque villages you’d most likely have missed if travelled by road. It was my first train ride and in between oohs and aahs I was able to capture the beauty that is Northern Nigeria in pixels.
Go Paint Balling
Bushfighters Paintball Arena – Get directions
Is adventure ever complete without an adrenaline fix? I think not. Gather a couple of your friends to join you at the Bushfighters Paintball Arena for an afternoon of dodging bullets.
Go On An Ice Cream & Waffles Date
Waffle Stop – Get directions
Temperature in Abuja peaks outrageously during the dry season. On a hot humid day, grab your favorite person and get some respite at Waffle Stop. Any excuse to have Abuja’s tastiest red velvet waffles & ice cream is valid. Fitfam can wait #IStandWithYou
Go On A Hike & Picnic
Usuma Dam – Get directions
Hike up to the summit, spread a blanket and enjoy the view.
If you stick around till the sun sets, the Gbagyi fisherman can be heard chanting as he rows his boat out to collect the nets he had deposited earlier. For those driving call Governor – +2348056411534 – ahead, he’s got the keys to the main gate.
Are there any other places you’ve been to in Abuja under ₦5,000? Feel free to share in the comment section.
